Joe was born on 8/15/45 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Attended Clemson University on a basketball scholarship in 1963, graduated with a BA degree in 1968. He was a three year letterman, captain of 17-8 team in 1966-67. Joe also was head high-school basketball coach from 1968-1972 in Charleston, S. C. Started a banking career in Los Angeles in 1972; moved to Marin County in 1992, worked for several community banks and retired as a S.V.P with Wells Fargo Bank in 2010. Joe was married in 1980 to Marie Castillo; daughter Susan graduated from Marin Catholic in 1999, received her BA from UC Santa Cruz, and her MA from the Monetary Institute of International Studies in 2007; son Joe Jr. graduated from Terra Linda in 2002, spent three years at CCSF and received his BA from UC Berkeley in 2008.
